US Afghanistan War Commission meets Asim Munir

A delegation of the US Afghanistan War Commission met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Monday.

The delegation was led by Commission Co-Chairs Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr Colin F. Jackson. The visit was part of the commission’s review of the United States’ two-decade engagement in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan’s role during the Afghanistan conflict, regional security and the latest developments in Afghanistan.

Field Marshal Asim Munir presented Pakistan’s perspective on the security situation that shaped the prolonged conflict. He also highlighted the challenges faced by Pakistan during the two decades of war in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The army chief stressed the importance of including the regional perspective and Pakistan’s experience in any assessment of the conflict. He said these factors were important for understanding its strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions.

The delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the Afghanistan conflict. It also appreciated Pakistan’s continued efforts toward regional peace and stability.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Pakistan’s experience and its contribution to regional security as the US commission reviews the outcomes and lessons of its 20-year engagement in Afghanistan.
