Millions of Americans are voting in the US midterm elections on Tuesday, in a contest that could change the balance of power in Congress and create serious political challenges for President Donald Trump. Opinion polls suggest that Democrats have a strong chance of winning control of the House of Representatives. Several Senate seats are also facing close contests. A Democratic victory could make it difficult for Trump to implement his political and economic agenda during the remaining years of his presidency.
Trump has indicated that he may use his presidential veto powers if Democrats gain control of Congress. He has even described himself as potentially becoming “Mr Veto”. However, he has also left the door open for negotiations with Democratic lawmakers. The White House is reportedly examining other ways to implement its policies without congressional approval. These could include executive actions on immigration, tariffs, housing and government spending.
The administration also faced a setback when the US Supreme Court rejected its request to stop the counting of disputed ballots in California. The government had raised concerns about the citizenship of some voters.
The elections have already attracted massive public participation. More than 51.3 million Americans had voted through mail-in ballots or early in-person voting before election day.
This figure is higher than the previous early-voting record set during the 2022 midterm elections. Democrats have maintained an overall lead in early voting, although Republican participation has also increased in several states.
Data from 27 states shows that Democrats account for 43.1 per cent of early voters, compared with 31.8 per cent for Republicans. Independent voters make up around 25 per cent.
Pennsylvania has recorded a particularly strong Democratic advantage, while Republicans have performed better in Florida.
These elections are important not only for political parties but also for the future direction of American politics. A Democratic victory could limit Trump’s power, while a Republican win would give him greater freedom to pursue his agenda. Ultimately, the results will show how much public support Trump still enjoys and whether American voters want a change in political direction.
