A study by British company John Lewis & Partners found that 49% of people consider marriage the most unforgettable moment of their lives. Meanwhile 47% said the birth of their first child was their most special memory.
The death of a loved one was also among the moments people said they could never forget with 45% choosing it.
The survey included 2,000 people.
Overall 57% said their most memorable experiences were connected to family while only 4% considered work and career achievements especially memorable.
Researchers said life is filled with important moments including moving into a first home having children and going on holidays. However family related memories often stay with people for much longer than everyday work experiences.
The study also found that 9 out of 10 people believe it is important to preserve special memories while 97% enjoy looking back at them.
Around 68% said remembering happy moments helps them get through difficult days. Other unforgettable moments included becoming a parent buying a first home passing a driving test falling in love meeting a future partner for the first time, losing a pet and getting engaged.
