MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a major squad change ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, confirming rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal as a replacement for veteran batter Virat Kohli, who has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Kohli sustained the injury during the IPL 2026 final while leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-pressure title defence. The setback has forced selectors to rethink the top order just days before India’s white-ball assignment.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar confirmed Kohli’s unavailability while addressing the media in Mumbai, though he offered cautious optimism about a possible return later in the season. According to him, the medical team is still assessing recovery timelines, and Kohli could potentially be fit for the England ODI series starting July 14.
However, no official return date has been confirmed, keeping India’s management on alert as they prepare for a packed international schedule.
Jaiswal’s inclusion marks another big step in his rapidly rising career. Having made his ODI debut in 2025, he has already shown glimpses of brilliance, including a memorable unbeaten century against South Africa that highlighted his fearless approach in white-ball cricket.
Known for his attacking style and composure under pressure, Jaiswal now faces one of the biggest opportunities of his young career—filling the shoes of one of India’s greatest modern batters.
India will begin the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan on June 13 in Dharamsala, followed by fixtures in Lucknow and Chennai. The series is expected to test India’s bench strength while offering young players a chance to step up on the international stage.
With Kohli sidelined and Jaiswal stepping in, India’s batting lineup enters a new and closely watched phase.
