Zeeshan Hamid named Ontario tourism and culture minister

Pakistani-Canadian politician Zeeshan Hamid has been appointed Ontario’s new Minister of Tourism and Culture as part of a cabinet reshuffle announced by Premier Doug Ford.

The changes involve several provincial ministries, with Hamid receiving the tourism and culture portfolio in Canada’s largest province.

Hamid, a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly, previously served as Associate Minister of Auto Theft and Bail Reform. His new appointment gives him responsibility for key areas linked to Ontario’s tourism sector, cultural activities and the promotion of the province as a destination for visitors.

Premier Doug Ford announced the changes as part of a broader adjustment to his provincial cabinet. The reshuffle is aimed at strengthening the government’s focus on several key policy areas and ensuring that ministers are assigned portfolios according to the province’s current priorities.

Hamid represents the Milton riding in Ontario and entered provincial politics after winning a by-election in 2024. The Pakistani-Canadian lawmaker was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Milton for the first time in that election.

His elevation to the tourism and culture portfolio marks a significant step in his political career, coming relatively soon after his entry into the Ontario legislature.

As tourism and culture minister, Hamid will be involved in policies concerning Ontario’s tourism industry, cultural institutions and initiatives designed to support economic activity connected to the sector.

Ontario has one of Canada’s largest and most diverse tourism markets, attracting visitors from across Canada and around the world. The sector contributes significantly to the provincial economy through hospitality, travel, entertainment, arts and cultural activities.

His transition from the associate minister responsible for auto theft and bail reform to a full cabinet portfolio reflects his growing role within the Ontario government.
