Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has made significant progress in addressing the housing needs of low-income families across the province.
She stated that nearly 170,000 houses have been provided to deserving families during the first 14 months of the current provincial government’s tenure, enabling thousands of people who previously lived without permanent shelter to move into homes of their own.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said the housing programme represents one of the largest welfare initiatives undertaken by the provincial government and reflects its commitment to improving the quality of life for underprivileged communities.
According to her, the Punjab government has allocated additional resources in the current budget to further expand the scheme. She expressed confidence that another 100,000 houses would be added under the programme, increasing the total number of housing units provided to 300,000 by June 2026.
She said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that every deserving family has access to safe, secure and affordable housing, adding that the government remains committed to extending welfare programmes to vulnerable segments of society.
Marriyum Aurangzeb noted that providing shelter to homeless families was not merely a development project but a mission to restore dignity and improve living conditions for thousands of citizens across Punjab.
She also highlighted the role of public welfare initiatives introduced by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, particularly in the healthcare sector.
Referring to the National Health Programme, she said the Health Card initiative was launched in 2014 during Nawaz Sharif’s tenure as prime minister and went on to become one of the largest public healthcare programmes in Pakistan’s history.
The programme was designed to provide financial protection to families facing expensive medical treatments and to ensure that quality healthcare services were accessible to people regardless of their financial circumstances.
She further stated that the first Health Card under the programme was launched in Nowshera during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government, marking the beginning of a nationwide effort to expand healthcare coverage.
According to government officials, the Health Card initiative has benefited millions of Pakistanis over the years by reducing the financial burden associated with medical treatment and hospital care.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said the continuation of housing and healthcare programmes demonstrates the government’s focus on public welfare and its determination to improve living standards through practical and sustainable reforms.
