33 Pakistani Unies break into US news global rankings, COMSATS leads at 410

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has secured a notable presence in the latest US News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2026-27, with 33 universities from the country making it into the international league table.

The rankings assess more than 2,250 universities from over 100 countries, placing significant emphasis on research performance, scholarly publications, citation impact and international academic reputation.

COMSATS University Islamabad emerged as Pakistan’s highest-ranked institution, securing the 410th position globally with a score of 52.0. Quaid-i-Azam University followed at 451st with a score of 50.7, while the University of Lahore ranked 479th with a score of 50.0.

The University of Management and Technology secured 573rd place, while the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) stood at 590th, completing Pakistan’s top five.

The ranking also features a wide range of public and private institutions from across the country. The University of Agriculture Faisalabad ranked 633rd, followed by the Islamia University Bahawalpur at 693rd and Aga Khan University at 739th. The University of the Punjab secured 762nd position, while Bahauddin Zakariya University ranked 795th.

Other Pakistani universities featured in the ranking include Government College University Faisalabad at 853rd, International Islamic University at 959th, Government College University Lahore at 1,112th, Lahore University of Management Sciences at 1,298th and the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore at 1,348th.

The University of Karachi appeared at 1,728th, while GIK Institute and Kohat University of Science and Technology were placed at 1,922nd and 2,189th, respectively.

Overall, seven of Pakistan’s top 10 institutions in the ranking are from the public sector, while three are private universities. The University of Lahore emerged as the highest-ranked private institution, while COMSATS Islamabad led the overall national standings.

The representation extends across several major Pakistani cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Karachi, Bahawalpur and Sargodha, highlighting the geographical spread of the country’s research-oriented higher education sector.

At the global level, Harvard University retained the top position, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

Unlike rankings that primarily focus on teaching facilities or campus experience, the US News global rankings place considerable weight on research-related indicators, including publications, citations, international collaboration and academic reputation.

The inclusion of 33 Pakistani institutions signals growing international visibility for the country’s universities and research output. However, education experts continue to point to funding constraints, research capacity and the need for stronger international partnerships as key areas requiring further improvement.

The latest rankings provide a snapshot of Pakistan’s growing presence in global higher education while highlighting the substantial gap that remains between its leading universities and the world’s top-ranked institutions.
