A democratic victory in AJK

The completion of the democratic process in Azad Jammu and Kashmir deserves to be welcomed. Elections have been held, a new Legislative Assembly has taken oath and the people’s representatives are preparing to form a new government. In a region of great political importance, the peaceful continuation of democracy is itself a positive development.

The nomination of Shah Ghulam Qadir as the next prime minister of AJK marks the beginning of a new chapter. A veteran politician with more than three decades of experience, Qadir brings a long record of parliamentary and political service. His experience as a minister, twice-elected assembly speaker, opposition leader and party president gives him a strong understanding of both government and opposition.

But winning an election is only the first step. The bigger challenge is bringing people together.

AJK, like every democracy, has political divisions. Elections can create bitterness, strong feelings and mistrust between political groups. The new prime minister should therefore make healing and reconciliation a priority. He should reach out not only to his supporters but also to those who voted for other parties. A government must serve every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

Qadir’s experience and political contacts across party lines could prove valuable at this important moment. He should encourage dialogue, strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that the opposition is treated with respect. A strong government does not fear criticism; it listens to criticism and uses it to improve.

The new administration must also focus on the everyday concerns of the people. Development, employment, education, healthcare and good governance should remain at the centre of its agenda. The concerns of Kashmiri refugees and the wider Kashmir cause must also continue to receive serious attention.

The PML-N’s clear majority gives the incoming government an opportunity to deliver. But a majority also brings responsibility. The people of AJK will judge the new government not by the size of its majority, but by the difference it makes in their lives.
