A welcome step for women’s mobility in KP

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s announcement of an electric bike scheme for women is a welcome step towards improving mobility, education and employment opportunities for women across the province.

Under the scheme, electric bikes will be provided on merit to female students and working women. The first phase is expected to be launched soon. If implemented transparently and efficiently, the programme could make a real difference in the daily lives of thousands of women.

For many female students and working women, safe and affordable transport remains a major challenge. Lack of reliable transport can limit access to educational institutions, workplaces and other opportunities. An electric bike can provide greater independence while also reducing daily transportation costs.

The proposed electric rickshaw scheme is another encouraging initiative. A shift towards electric public and private transport can help reduce fuel consumption, air pollution and pressure on household budgets. KP should therefore develop these programmes as part of a wider clean and affordable transport policy.

The chief minister’s direction to accelerate work on electric buses for divisional headquarters is equally important. Public transport should be expanded beyond major cities so that people in smaller urban centres can also benefit from modern, affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.

However, successful implementation will be more important than announcements. The government should ensure that the selection process for electric bikes is transparent and based strictly on merit. It should also provide charging facilities, maintenance support and basic training for beneficiaries.

The government should pay particular attention to safety. Women using electric bikes need secure roads, proper traffic management and an environment in which they can travel without fear.

The KP government’s focus on electric mobility is therefore a positive development. It combines women’s empowerment with environmental responsibility and modern transportation.

If implemented honestly and efficiently, these initiatives can help create a cleaner, more mobile and more inclusive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
