Israel’s latest warning that it could again attack Iran is a worrying reminder of the dangerous state of the Middle East. Israeli leaders say they will use military force if Iran resumes its nuclear programme or rebuilds its ballistic missile capabilities. Such statements may be presented as self-defence, but repeatedly threatening another country with military action also reflects the behaviour of a regional bully.

A bully believes that strength gives it the right to decide what others can or cannot do. Israel appears to be following this approach when it openly threatens military strikes even before diplomatic efforts have been given a full chance to work. No country should be allowed to act as judge, jury and executioner in international affairs.

Iran’s nuclear programme is a serious international issue and legitimate concerns about nuclear weapons must be addressed. But military threats and repeated attacks are not a lasting solution. They can instead create more fear, anger and instability. The Middle East has already suffered enough from wars that have destroyed lives, displaced families and damaged entire economies.

Israel argues that it faces genuine security threats, and every country has the right to protect its people. However, security cannot become a licence for unlimited military action. When powerful states threaten force whenever they believe their interests are at risk, international law and diplomacy become weaker.

The reported US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year have already pushed the region towards a dangerous confrontation. Another round of attacks could bring unpredictable consequences. Iran could retaliate, drawing other countries and armed groups into a wider conflict. Ordinary people would once again pay the highest price.

The international community must therefore oppose the politics of threats and encourage dialogue. Iran must address legitimate international concerns about its nuclear activities, while Israel must also recognise that peace cannot be achieved through intimidation alone.

The Middle East needs diplomacy, restraint and respect for international law—not another cycle of threats and destruction. Acting like a bully may demonstrate military power, but it does not create lasting security.
