Pakistan-UAE ties need stronger economic foundations

The call by UAE-based business leader Suhail Muhammad Al Zarooni for deeper economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates deserves serious attention. Pakistan and the UAE share a relationship built over decades, but there is still enormous potential for greater trade, investment, tourism and business cooperation.

Pakistan needs foreign investment, new markets and employment opportunities. The UAE, with its strong economy and position as a global business hub, can be an important partner in achieving these goals. Greater cooperation in technology, logistics, real estate, industry and tourism could benefit both countries.

Tourism is one area where Pakistan has not fully used its potential. The country has beautiful mountains, valleys, beaches, historic places and a rich culture. In the past, Pakistan was a popular destination for visitors from Gulf countries. With better hotels, transport, security, visa facilities and tourist services, Pakistan could once again attract visitors from the UAE and other Arab states.

However, strong economic relations also depend on strong people-to-people ties. Millions of Pakistanis have worked in the Gulf, and the Pakistani community in the UAE has long served as an important bridge between the two countries. Their contribution to Pakistan’s economy through remittances and employment opportunities cannot be ignored.

This is why reports and concerns about Pakistanis being expelled or facing difficulties in obtaining and maintaining visas in the UAE should worry policymakers. The loss of employment opportunities for Pakistanis abroad is not simply an individual problem. It can also affect families at home, reduce remittances and place additional pressure on Pakistan’s already struggling economy.

Pakistan must therefore work closely with the UAE to address issues affecting its citizens and improve the country’s image abroad. At the same time, irresponsible behaviour by individuals, including misuse of social media, should not be allowed to damage the reputation of millions of hardworking Pakistanis.

The friendship between Pakistan and the UAE is too important to be weakened by misunderstandings or neglect. Both governments should focus on practical solutions that promote investment, tourism and employment.
