Adrian Hamilton-Manns has formally assumed charge as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), bringing more than 30 years of international aviation experience to the national carrier as it moves ahead with its restructuring and transformation.
PIA announced the appointment in a statement shared on social media on Monday. The airline’s board welcomed Hamilton-Manns, highlighting his extensive leadership experience and expertise in developing and restructuring aviation businesses.
According to the airline, the new CEO has previously led three airlines and held senior management positions at several other aviation companies. His experience in turning around struggling airlines is expected to support PIA’s efforts to improve its operations, strengthen its business performance and expand its international presence.
The appointment also marks the end of Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Amir Hayat’s tenure as the airline’s CEO. PIA’s board and the new management consortium acknowledged his services and thanked him for leading the airline through a challenging period.
During Hayat’s tenure, PIA faced several operational and regulatory difficulties. However, the airline credited his leadership with improving aviation safety standards, securing the removal of restrictions on flights to Europe and the United Kingdom, and laying the groundwork for its privatisation.
The airline also acknowledged his role in restoring international flight operations and strengthening its institutional position.
PIA’s leadership change comes after a major shift in the ownership and management of the national carrier. In December last year, a consortium led by the Arif Habib Group secured a 75 per cent stake in the airline through a privatisation deal.
The consortium, which included prominent Pakistani business figures, submitted the highest bid of Rs135 billion during the competitive auction, surpassing a rival group led by businessman Muhammad Ali Tabba.
The government subsequently completed the privatisation process, with the Arif Habib-led consortium taking control of PIA’s management in June.
Hamilton-Manns now takes charge at a crucial stage as the airline seeks to improve its financial position, operational efficiency and international competitiveness under its new ownership.
