GILGIT: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate has been elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The announcement was made during a session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. The session was presided over by Speaker Imran Nadeem.
No other candidate submitted nomination papers for the office of Chief Minister. As a result, Amjad Hussain was declared elected without contest.
All members present in the assembly reportedly extended their support to the PPP candidate. This paved the way for his smooth and uncontested election.
With this development, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Earlier, major changes were also seen in the assembly leadership. PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Kifayat-ur-Rehman was elected Deputy Speaker.
Former Speaker Nazir Ahmed administered the oath to newly elected Speaker Imran Nadeem. After the ceremony, he formally handed over the Speaker’s responsibilities.
Later, Speaker Imran Nadeem administered the oath to Deputy Speaker Kifayat-ur-Rehman, completing the formation of the new assembly leadership.
