CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has reportedly expressed concerns about the possibility of working under CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss as speculation grows over a major media merger that could reshape the American news industry.
According to multiple reports, Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, is preparing to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, in a deal reportedly valued at $111 billion. If completed, the merger would place two of America’s most influential news organizations under a single corporate umbrella.
The proposed transaction is expected to hand control of the combined media empire to David Ellison, the technology executive and Paramount owner who has been described as having close ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Although Ellison has not publicly outlined his editorial vision for CNN, the prospect of new leadership has reportedly created uncertainty among employees at the cable news network.
One of the biggest concerns reportedly centers on Bari Weiss, who currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of CBS News. Anderson Cooper has privately told colleagues that he has no interest in working under Weiss should the merger move forward.
The veteran CNN journalist previously worked alongside Weiss during his time as a correspondent for CBS’s long-running news magazine 60 Minutes. Cooper stepped away from the program earlier this year after spending two decades with the network, ending a significant chapter of his journalism career.
Weiss became the first Editor-in-Chief in CBS News history after assuming the role in October 2025 following Paramount’s restructuring of the network. Her appointment marked a major shift in leadership and has since generated considerable debate both inside and outside the newsroom.
Reports suggest that several senior producers and journalists have resigned since Weiss took over, with some allegedly citing ideological differences.
The controversy surrounding Weiss intensified following the departure of veteran broadcaster Scott Pelley from 60 Minutes. Pelley, who had been associated with CBS News for nearly four decades, reportedly left the network last month after 37 years. According to reports, he sharply criticized Weiss during an internal meeting, accusing her of damaging the legacy and editorial standards of the iconic news program.
While neither Cooper nor Weiss has publicly commented on the reported claims, the speculation has attracted widespread attention as the media industry closely watches the proposed merger.
If the deal receives regulatory approval, it would create one of the largest media consolidations in recent history, combining major television networks, streaming platforms, and digital news operations under a single ownership structure.
For now, questions remain about how editorial independence, newsroom leadership, and corporate management would evolve if CNN and CBS News become part of the same organization. As negotiations continue, employees across both companies are reportedly waiting for greater clarity about the future direction of their newsrooms and the leadership that will guide them through one of the industry’s most significant transitions.
