Anne Hathaway says returning to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey felt like a homecoming

Anne Hathaway is reflecting on her long-awaited reunion with acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, describing the experience of working on The Odyssey as nothing short of a “homecoming.” After more than a decade since their last collaboration, the Oscar-winning actress has returned to Nolan’s set for his ambitious adaptation of Homer’s legendary epic poem, and she says stepping back into his creative world felt instantly familiar. 

Hathaway first teamed up with Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), where she played Selina Kyle, and later starred as astronaut Dr. Amelia Brand in the science-fiction epic Interstellar (2014). Now, 12 years later, the pair have reunited for The Odyssey, one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters. The actress admitted that although she has changed personally and professionally over the years, Nolan’s dedication to filmmaking and his respect for everyone on set remain exactly as she remembered. 

Speaking about the reunion, Hathaway praised Nolan’s leadership and meticulous approach to filmmaking. She described him as a director who creates an atmosphere built on trust, preparation and collaboration. According to the actress, returning to work with him felt like reconnecting with family, making the production feel comfortable despite the film’s enormous scale. That sense of familiarity is why she referred to the experience as a “homecoming.” 

In The Odyssey, Hathaway takes on the role of Penelope, the devoted wife of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon. While her husband embarks on a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War, Penelope waits faithfully for his return while protecting their kingdom from unwanted suitors. Hathaway has said she drew inspiration from her own marriage to Adam Shulman, explaining that her understanding of love, loyalty and partnership helped shape her portrayal of the iconic character. 

The film features one of the most impressive ensembles in recent memory. Alongside Hathaway and Damon, the cast includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and several other Hollywood stars. Directed by Nolan, the epic adventure reimagines Homer’s timeless tale through breathtaking visuals and emotional storytelling. 

For Hathaway, however, the heart of the experience was not just joining another blockbuster but reconnecting with a filmmaker she deeply admires. She credited Nolan’s consistent professionalism and passion for creating an environment where actors can give their very best performances. Even after 12 years apart, she said returning to his set felt remarkably natural and inspiring.
