Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday to keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City, while Manchester United’s difficult start to the season continued with a frustrating draw against Leeds United.
The Gunners struggled to break down Forest’s defence for much of the contest but found a decisive breakthrough in the 80th minute through substitute Noni Madueke. His effort took a deflection off Jair Cunha before finding the net, giving Arsenal three valuable points despite an unconvincing attacking display.
The result lifted Mikel Arteta’s side back into second place, three points behind City, who maintained their perfect home record with a seventh consecutive victory at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal managed just one shot on target throughout the match, highlighting their struggles in the final third. However, their ability to secure results even when below their best could prove crucial in the title race.
Forest missed several late opportunities to find an equaliser and slipped into the relegation zone after another disappointing result.
Manchester United’s struggles deepen
Manchester United’s search for consistency continued at Elland Road, where they were held to a 1-1 draw by fierce rivals Leeds.
United appeared to be heading towards a much-needed victory after Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 35th minute. The forward finished clinically after receiving a cross from Youri Tielemans, registering his fourth goal of the season.
However, Leeds responded strongly after the interval and equalised six minutes into the second half. England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin controlled the ball on his chest before stretching to finish following Tarik Muharemovic’s header from a corner.
The draw extended United’s winless run to six matches in all competitions. They have recorded just one league victory in seven games and remain 13th in the standings, marking their poorest win tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1986-87.
Manager Michael Carrick insisted his players had shown encouraging signs despite their continued struggles.
United’s difficulties have been compounded by concerns over confidence and a recent public criticism of the club’s hierarchy by defender Lisandro Martinez following their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Brighton deliver a stunning performance
Elsewhere, Brighton produced one of the weekend’s most emphatic results, thrashing Crystal Palace 5-0. Diego Gomez stole the spotlight with a spectacular strike from the halfway line.
Brighton’s attacking form has been particularly impressive, with their 23 goals in their opening seven league matches ranking among the highest totals in Premier League history at this stage of a season.
Bournemouth also claimed their first league victory of the campaign, beating 10-man Sunderland 2-0 through goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson.
While Arsenal strengthened their title ambitions with a late winner, Manchester United’s latest setback raised further questions about their ability to turn their season around.
