Kylian Mbappe delivered a dazzling performance with two goals as Real Madrid crushed Sevilla 4-1 on Sunday, climbing to third in La Liga and building momentum ahead of next weekend’s crucial El Clasico against Barcelona.
The French superstar scored a stunning individual goal before converting a Panenka-style penalty, while Arda Guler and Yan Diomande also found the net to secure a convincing victory for Jose Mourinho’s side at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The result lifted Madrid above Real Betis, although they remained six points behind league leaders Barcelona, who defeated Betis on Saturday. Atletico Madrid occupied second place, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown between Spain’s leading clubs.
“We played a great game,” Mourinho told Real Madrid TV, praising his players’ teamwork and commitment despite the relatively short time they had worked together.
Mbappe’s Magic Lights Up Bernabeu
Madrid initially struggled to break down Sevilla’s defence, but Guler changed the contest with a spectacular strike in the 30th minute.
After Jude Bellingham moved the ball wide to Diomande, the Ivorian winger picked out Guler near the edge of the penalty area. The Turkish midfielder then produced a superb curling effort that sailed beyond goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and into the top corner.
Mbappe soon doubled the advantage with a goal that showcased his exceptional close control and finishing ability.
Bellingham supplied a clever backheel into the forward’s path, allowing Mbappe to spin past a defender with a roulette turn before evading the goalkeeper and calmly rolling the ball into the net.
The Frenchman added his second from the penalty spot after going down following contact from Andres Castrin inside the area. Showing remarkable composure, he chipped the ball into the net with a delicate Panenka finish, taking his league tally to nine goals.
Sevilla briefly threatened a comeback when Manuel Bueno scored with a neat finish, but Madrid quickly regained control.
Diomande then sealed the victory with a powerful long-range strike, registering his second goal since joining the club from RB Leipzig during the summer.
Sevilla Question Refereeing Decisions
Despite the convincing scoreline, the match was overshadowed by controversy surrounding Guler’s early challenge on Sevilla’s Peque.
The Madrid midfielder appeared to elbow his opponent midway through the first half but escaped a red card, prompting furious protests from Sevilla coach Luis Garcia Plaza.
Garcia Plaza argued that his team had been denied the opportunity to play against 10 men for much of the match. Mourinho, meanwhile, said he had not seen replays that proved the incident warranted a dismissal.
Madrid’s victory provides a timely confidence boost before their meeting with Barcelona at Camp Nou next weekend.
With Mbappe in prolific form and the title race intensifying, the upcoming Clasico could prove crucial to Madrid’s hopes of closing the gap at the top of La Liga.
