Babar Azam reveals Pakistan’s plan for youthful Test team

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has defended the team’s youthful squad, saying Pakistan will adopt a balanced combination of experienced players and emerging talent in the upcoming Test assignments.

Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi, Babar said the decision to invest in younger players had already been made during the team’s previous tour of England, despite questions about the lack of experience in the current Test setup.

He acknowledged that Pakistan’s Test team was undergoing a noticeable transition, with seven to eight players belonging to the younger generation. However, he expressed confidence in their abilities, pointing out that several players had arrived after featuring in first-class cricket and were in good form.

“We will go with a combination of senior and junior players in Test cricket,” Babar said, emphasising the importance of maintaining a balance between experience and fresh talent.

The captain also addressed questions about his individual performances, acknowledging that no cricketer could be perfect and that there was always room for improvement.

He said he regularly reflected on his mistakes and believed that gaining more experience would help him improve as a player. According to Babar, cricket naturally involves fluctuations in performance, and players cannot be expected to deliver identical results in every match.

Discussing his leadership responsibilities, Babar said he communicated with selectors whenever necessary and remained involved in discussions concerning the team’s requirements.

He added that every series was important to him and that his priority was always to help Pakistan win matches. As a senior player, he said he remained committed to delivering strong performances and meeting supporters’ expectations.

Babar also acknowledged that fans were waiting for an improved performance from him, indicating his awareness of the pressure and expectations surrounding his batting.

The Pakistan captain also praised former batting great Mohammad Yousuf, describing him as a legend and one of the country’s finest cricketers.

Although he had not yet been in contact with Yousuf, Babar said he would welcome the opportunity to learn from the former Pakistan batter if he reached out.

His comments underline Pakistan’s approach of combining emerging players with experienced campaigners while rebuilding its Test side for future challenges.
