Teenage forward Lennart Karl and Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer found the net as the German champions secured a valuable three points at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, proving that their squad depth remains a major strength despite several key absences.
Bayern travelled to Madrid without several influential players, including Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari. Their preparations were further disrupted by the absence of head coach Vincent Kompany, who missed the match due to a meningitis-related illness.
However, captain Joshua Kimmich and star striker Harry Kane helped guide the team through a challenging evening, while Karl emerged as one of the standout performers.
Atletico initially threatened to take control, with Julian Alvarez narrowly missing the target just three minutes into the contest. Kane also had an opportunity to open the scoring midway through the first half but sent his effort wide.
The breakthrough arrived after Atletico defender Robin Le Normand hesitated in possession. Karl seized the opportunity, stole the ball and cleverly lifted his finish over goalkeeper Jan Oblak to put Bayern ahead.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone responded by making three substitutions in an attempt to turn the contest around. However, Bayern quickly strengthened their advantage.
Kane produced an intelligent pass into Laimer’s path, allowing the midfielder to unleash a powerful strike that went in off the crossbar.
Bayern thought they had added a third goal when Dayot Upamecano headed home with 10 minutes remaining, but the effort was ruled out for an attacking foul.
Despite their limited options from the bench, the visitors comfortably managed the closing stages, preventing Atletico from mounting a comeback.
Laimer, who was named UEFA’s Man of the Match, said Bayern had demonstrated the quality and confidence within their squad despite the difficult circumstances.
Meanwhile, Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente admitted that Karl’s opening goal had stunned the home side.
The result lifted Bayern to eighth place in the 36-team Champions League standings after two victories and two draws. Atletico, meanwhile, finished the night in 22nd position.
Kane missed the opportunity to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League matches, but Bayern’s collective performance ensured that individual milestones took a back seat to a significant European victory.
