US hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has recalled an unusual conversation with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who told him he had not drunk plain water in 48 years.
Speaking on the Equity Mates Investing podcast, released on October 28, Ackman recounted hosting Buffett for dinner several years ago.
Ackman said he offered Buffett still or sparkling water, but the investor declined and asked for Cherry Coke instead.
When Ackman asked whether he drank water, Buffett replied: “Bill, I haven’t had water in 48 years,” according to Ackman’s account.
The anecdote has renewed attention on Buffett’s well-known preference for sugary soft drinks. In a 2015 interview with Fortune magazine, Buffett said that about a quarter of his daily intake of 2,700 calories came from Coca-Cola.
“I drink at least five 12-ounce servings,” he told the magazine, adding that he typically had three Cokes during the day and two at night.
Buffett’s reported remark to Ackman was made during a private dinner years ago. Ackman did not specify when the conversation took place, and the anecdote does not independently establish Buffett’s drinking habits over the past 48 years.
