Karachi: The selection process for the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi has entered its final stage after the search committee completed interviews of more than 40 candidates competing for the position.
The interviews concluded on Tuesday, with several senior academics and education professionals appearing before the committee to present their qualifications and future plans for leading one of Pakistan’s largest public universities. Following the completion of the interviews, the search committee will recommend three suitable candidates to the controlling authority, Sindh Chief Minister, for the final decision.
Sources said the competition among candidates remained intense due to the strong academic backgrounds and administrative experience of many applicants. The committee reportedly faced challenges in reaching consensus over the selection of the final three names from a pool of highly qualified candidates.
Among the candidates considered during the process were senior educationists and university administrators, including Professor Shehnila Zardari of NED University, Government College University Hyderabad Vice Chancellor Muazzam Ali Khan, Metropolitan University Karachi Vice Chancellor Dr Wasim Qazi, Lyari University Vice Chancellor Dr Hussain Mehdi, former Higher Education Commission Executive Director Dr Zia-ul-Qayyum, and several other prominent academics.
The current Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr Khalid Iraqi, did not participate in the interview process. His term is scheduled to end on July 28, leaving the university awaiting the appointment of his successor.
Sources further indicated that discussions during the selection process also involved broader institutional challenges facing the university. Some committee members reportedly examined candidates’ views on issues related to the future structure and independence of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), a major research institution associated with Karachi University.
However, sources clarified that the entire search committee was not part of any specific policy position regarding the possible separation of ICCBS from the university. The matter remains a subject of discussion among relevant stakeholders.
The three shortlisted candidates whose names will be forwarded to the Sindh chief minister may be required to clarify their positions on important institutional matters during the next phase of the appointment process.
The appointment of the new Vice Chancellor is considered significant for Karachi University, which plays a major role in higher education and research in Pakistan. The new head will face challenges including improving academic standards, strengthening research activities, addressing administrative issues, and maintaining cooperation among different university departments and affiliated institutions.
