Courteney Cox reveals surprise behind ‘Evil Genius’

Friends star Courteney Cox has revealed how an unexpected encounter at a Beverly Hills hotel eventually led her to the director’s chair for Evil Genius, marking her first feature directing project in 12 years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cox crossed paths with Barbara Schroeder, director of the Netflix documentary Evil Genius, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Cox said she approached Schroeder to praise her work on the documentary, unaware that the meeting would soon open the door to a new filmmaking opportunity.

Cox recalled telling Schroeder how much she admired Evil Genius, before Schroeder unexpectedly suggested that she take on the feature adaptation.

“She said, ‘It’s available to direct.’ She goes, ‘You should run with it,’” Cox recalled.

The actress joked about the significance of the Beverly Hills Hotel, saying she had previously made several business deals there. She quipped that those conversations always happened at the counter because she could not get inside the poker room.

Although the encounter planted the seed, bringing Evil Genius to the screen was far from easy. Cox revealed that the project took around eight years to develop, with production eventually beginning in 2025.

The lengthy process was further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood strikes in 2023. Despite the repeated delays, Cox said she remained committed to the project because she felt strongly about the story.

The film is inspired by the infamous 2003 “pizza bomber” case involving Brian Wells, whose death became the centre of a bizarre and disturbing criminal investigation.

Cox said she believed the story contained far more emotional depth than what had appeared in news reports. She wanted to explore the human stories beneath the headlines and described the material as emotional, touching and terrifying.

The film features Patricia Arquette, David Harbour, Michael Chernus, Garret Dillahunt and Danielle Macdonald in key roles.

Cox praised the cast, saying she was fortunate to have talented actors capable of bringing the complicated story and its characters to life.

Adding a personal touch to the project, Cox’s daughter Coco and Arquette’s daughter Harlow also appear in small roles. Cox noted that Coco has developed a strong interest in performing.

Evil Genius is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 12, 2026, marking an important new chapter in Cox’s career behind the camera.
