LAHORE: Data Darbar, one of South Asia’s most revered spiritual destinations, is set for a major transformation as the Punjab government accelerates development work aimed at improving facilities for millions of devotees while preserving the shrine’s historic and religious significance.
Adviser to the Chief Minister of Punjab on Artificial Intelligence and Special Initiatives and Chairman of the Religious Affairs Committee for Data Darbar, Ali Dar, said providing comfort, dignity and modern facilities to visitors remained a top priority of the provincial government.
He made these remarks during the formal inauguration of a newly developed passage and designated area for devotees at the shrine of Hazrat Ali Hajveri (RA), widely known as Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (RA).
Ali Dar described the shrine as an extraordinary spiritual heritage and a symbol of love, peace, enlightenment and humanity. He said the development initiative was not simply an infrastructure project but an effort to improve the experience of millions of pilgrims through better accessibility, modern amenities and more dignified arrangements.
He added that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was personally overseeing the landmark initiative, reflecting the government’s commitment to protecting Punjab’s religious and cultural heritage.
Ali Dar expressed confidence that all remaining development work would be completed before next year’s Urs, ensuring that devotees could benefit from improved facilities during the annual religious gathering.
Secretary and Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr Ehsan Bhutta said Data Darbar remained a centre of spiritual enlightenment, with the teachings of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (RA) on compassion, tolerance, divine love and service to humanity continuing to inspire generations.
He stressed that modern infrastructure must complement the shrine’s historic architecture, spiritual atmosphere and centuries-old traditions.
Dr Bhutta said the Auqaf Department was working closely with NESPAK, the Communication and Works Department and relevant engineering teams to accelerate construction, maintain quality standards and ensure timely completion.
Meanwhile, marble designs for the flooring of the shrine’s Courtyard and Sama Hall were finalised as part of the ongoing development project.
The ceremony also included Fateha and special prayers for Pakistan’s peace, stability and prosperity.
Senior Auqaf officials, including Director General Religious Affairs Hafiz Anees-ur-Rehman, project representatives and engineering officials, attended the occasion.
With the project progressing, the government aims to transform Data Darbar into a world-class spiritual destination where improved visitor facilities go hand in hand with the preservation of its sacred heritage.
