Dax Shepard has revealed that raising two daughters going through puberty has become the biggest source of stress in his marriage to actress Kristen Bell.
The 51-year-old actor discussed the challenges of parenting teenagers during Wednesday’s episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, where he spoke with Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster and her sister, Sara Foster. Shepard explained that although he and Bell have managed their relationship well over the past 19 years, raising their daughters has introduced new challenges that require constant adjustments.
The couple share two daughters, Lincoln, 13, and Delta, 11, and Shepard admitted that navigating this stage of their lives has changed the dynamics of their marriage.
“It throws the whole dynamic into a new zone that you have to figure out,” he explained.
Shepard said parenting challenges evolve as children grow older. When children are very young, parents often worry excessively about making the wrong decisions because they feel responsible for every aspect of their development.
According to the actor, however, the period between early childhood and puberty can be relatively comfortable for parents. During those years, couples often establish routines and reach compromises that help them manage family life more easily.
Puberty, on the other hand, introduces a different set of circumstances that can force parents to reconsider their approaches.
Shepard explained that when unexpected situations arise, he and Bell must develop new strategies to deal with them. However, they do not always agree on the best way to handle every issue, sometimes leading to disagreements over decisions involving their daughters.
He described these situations as stressful and acknowledged that parenting responsibilities can put additional pressure on their relationship.
Shepard even suggested that their marriage might be considerably easier without children, although he made it clear that the difficulties stem from the challenges of raising a family rather than a lack of commitment to each other.
Despite these pressures, the actor insisted that he and Bell do not resort to screaming or swearing at one another during arguments. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that his tendency to speak loudly can contribute to disagreements.
He also revealed that the couple sometimes postpone difficult conversations instead of addressing their differences immediately.
According to Shepard, they occasionally struggle to find the right time to discuss sensitive matters without their children being present. Even when family activities leave them with some free time, the expectation of an upcoming conversation can create tension over several consecutive evenings.
The actor’s candid remarks offer a glimpse into the realities of maintaining a long-term relationship while raising children and managing the emotional changes that come with adolescence.
Shepard and Bell have been together since 2007 and married in 2013. Throughout their relationship, both actors have spoken openly about the challenges of balancing marriage, parenting and their public lives.
Bell recently discussed the emotional demands of motherhood and marriage in an interview with Bustle, revealing that she cries on a weekly basis while navigating the pressures of raising children in the public eye.
The actress has previously explained that she shares aspects of her family’s experiences because she hopes other parents will feel less alone when facing similar struggles. However, she has also emphasised that protecting her daughters remains her primary responsibility.
Shepard has likewise been open about the kind of independence he hopes to encourage in his children.
During an episode of his podcast last November, he explained that he wants his daughters to develop the confidence to stand up for themselves, particularly when dealing with difficult people or uncomfortable situations as adults.
He said his priority is to ensure that when his daughters are 19 and encounter an inappropriate or intimidating boss, they feel confident enough to speak up.
His latest comments highlight how the challenges of parenting continue to change as children grow, requiring parents to adapt their approaches while working together to maintain a healthy relationship.
