Dr. Aslam Azad hailed as “crusader of hope” on 61st birth anniversary in Thatta

THATTA: Speakers paid glowing tributes to Dr. Aslam Azad at an event organized by Sindhi Adabi Sangat and the National Press Club, Thatta, to mark his 61st birth anniversary on Monday.

They eulogized the courage and audacity of Dr. Azad for his active involvement in social and cultural events and his ability to inspire society through his distinct approach to life.

Dr. Azad, a social activist, medical practitioner, journalist, columnist, and student leader, was left completely paralyzed as a result of a road accident on 29th December 1991. Despite being bedridden for more than three decades, Dr. Azad has not let himself down and has tried his best to remain socially active.

Addressing a large public gathering at the National Press Club Hall, Makli, former senator of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Sassui Palijo, said that over the years she had idealized Dr. Aslam Azad and had learned a lot from him. She further mentioned that in hard times, when youth are anxious and uncertain about their future, Dr. Azad is an example for them to live life fully and courageously.

Historian Dr. Muhammad Ali Manji described the life of Dr. Azad as a throbbing journey lived with exceptional courage and valor. “There were times when the patience of Dr. Azad was tested by destiny, but he never gave up and carved hope out of hopelessness,” said Dr. Muhammad Ali Manji.

Veteran politician Dada Abdul Qadir Ranto said that in an era when mental frustration had engulfed society and the suicide rate was surging with every passing day, Aslam Azad had stood as a crusader of hope and dignity.

Artist Hameed Maheranvi and journalists Ramzan Memon and Mehboob Brohi said that Dr. Aslam Azad regularly reads books on history, culture, and politics and is worried about the future of Sindh.

Expressing his gratitude to the office-bearers of the National Press Club and members of Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Dr. Azad said that the current state of affairs in Sindh was not encouraging, yet the youth should not be dismayed and should keep working hard. He was elated at the honor given to him by the journalists and literati.

It is pertinent to mention here that Dr. Azad served as correspondent of the noted Urdu newspaper _Jang_, _Sindh Daily Jago_, and also served as President of the Student Wing of Awami Tehreek at LUMHS Jamshoro from 1984 to 1989.
