According to the commission’s order, the three political figures were legally required to provide details of their financial position under the Elections Act, 2017. The required declarations were not submitted within the deadline prompting the ECP to initiate proceedings under the relevant electoral provisions.

The commission held that failure to furnish the mandatory financial statements amounts to non-compliance with the legal requirements applicable to elected representatives.

As a result, the three have been barred from contesting elections until they meet the statutory requirements and comply with the relevant provisions of election law.

The ECP has repeatedly stressed that elected representatives are required to disclose their assets and liabilities as part of the country’s electoral accountability framework. Such declarations are intended to provide greater transparency regarding the financial interests of public office holders.
