Indian filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently took a nostalgic trip down memory lane while filming a vlog with actors Murali Sharma and Ashwini Kalsekar. What began as a relaxed cooking session soon turned into an entertaining discussion about memorable moments from the sets of the 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na, offering fans a glimpse into the challenges of filmmaking before the widespread use of advanced computer-generated visual effects.

During the conversation, Sharma reflected on his experience portraying one of the film’s antagonists and shared an amusing story from his very first day on set. Having recently completed work on the critically acclaimed crime drama Maqbool, the actor approached his role in ‘Main Hoon Na’ with the same serious and realistic style of performance.

However, Farah quickly reminded him that the film followed a very different cinematic style. According to Sharma, the director called out to him through a megaphone in front of hundreds of crew members, asking why he was acting as though he were still performing in “Maqbool”. She encouraged him to embrace the larger-than-life tone of the film instead of focusing on realism, a moment that left everyone on the set amused.

Farah laughed as she recalled frequently having to persuade actors with theatre backgrounds to adopt a more exaggerated style suited to commercial Bollywood entertainment. She revealed that even veteran performer Naseeruddin Shah required similar guidance when working on mainstream productions.

The discussion then shifted to one of the film’s most memorable action sequences, highlighting the technical limitations filmmakers faced more than two decades ago. Sharma explained that he had been secured to a harness for a stunt requiring him to step out of a vehicle and be lifted toward the first floor of a building. At the time, stunt technology and safety equipment were far less sophisticated than they are today.

To steady himself before the lift began, Sharma instinctively held onto the car door. When the stunt crew activated the wires, the force unexpectedly tore the door completely off the vehicle. Instead of floating smoothly into the air as planned, the actor and the detached car door were lifted together, creating an unintentional but hilarious moment that left the entire crew laughing.

Sharma recalled that when the film’s lead star, Shah Rukh Khan, later watched the playback of the scene, he could not stop laughing. According to the actor, Shah Rukh found the mishap so funny that he rolled on the floor with laughter while watching the footage.

The vlog also offered viewers a more personal glimpse into Sharma and Kalsekar’s relationship, which has spanned more than 25 years. Before establishing himself as a well-known actor in both Bollywood and South Indian cinema, Sharma worked as a journalist.

Kalsekar fondly remembered those early days, joking that Sharma had plenty of confidence and attitude when they first met. She laughed that she was equally strong-willed, making their early interactions both entertaining and memorable.

The couple reminisced about working together on popular television serials, including Udaan and CID, where their friendship gradually developed into a lasting relationship.
