ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved a proposed local government system for the federal capital, paving the way for the introduction of an elected local governance structure in Islamabad.

According to sources, the legislation concerning the Islamabad local government system will be presented before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior for consideration and approval tomorrow.

Under the proposed framework, Islamabad’s local government system will comprise three constituencies. The councils will include general councillors, along with reserved representation for women and minorities.

Sources said that following approval by the Standing Committee on Interior, the bill will be placed before the Senate and National Assembly for further consideration and approval.

The proposed system is aimed at establishing a formal local governance structure in the federal capital and providing representation to different segments of the city’s population.
