Fiji declares emergency as HIV infections surge across Island nation

SUVA: Fiji has declared a national emergency following a sharp rise in HIV infections, with health officials warning that the Pacific island nation is facing one of its most serious public health challenges in recent years.

Nearly one in every 60 adults in Fiji is now estimated to be living with the blood-borne virus, a significant increase from the figure of one in 167 recorded five years ago. Authorities have also reported a rise in the number of children dying from HIV-related complications.

Fiji, which has a population of fewer than one million people, recorded 2,016 new HIV cases in 2025 alone, highlighting the rapid spread of the virus and placing additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

Health experts and non-governmental organisations previously told the BBC that drug use, unprotected sex and the growing practice known as “Bluetoothing” were contributing to the worsening outbreak. The term refers to the deliberate transmission of HIV between individuals.

Officials and health advocates have called for stronger prevention campaigns, improved access to testing and treatment, and greater public awareness to contain the spread of the virus. They have also urged communities to address the stigma surrounding HIV, which can discourage people from seeking medical assistance.

The declaration of a national emergency is expected to accelerate the government’s response and encourage closer cooperation between health authorities, international organisations and civil society groups.
