Floating city plan announced for 80,000 residents at sea

Would you like to live in the world’s first “floating city” which will have accommodation for 80,000 people and will dwarf even the largest cruise ships? If yes, then a company called Freedom Cruise aims to make it a reality.

The city will be powered by nuclear energy and according to CEO Roger Gooch, they are confident they will make it happen. It will essentially be a massive ship capable of housing 80,000 people making it much larger than Royal Caribbean currently the world’s largest cruise operator.

Royal Caribbean ships can carry 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members at a time. The Freedom Ship, a floating city for 80,000 people will carry 80,000 people in total including residents, tourists and crew. Its estimated cost is around $16.16 billion.

According to the company, the Freedom Ship can be described as a permanent mobile city on the ocean where people can live for long periods. The company says it will not simply be a transport vessel but will be designed like an urban environment with all modern facilities.

The ship will include schools, colleges, shops, banks, nightclubs and even a two-story food hall offering a variety of cuisines. The proposed vessel will be about one mile long and it will also feature an internal tram system connecting different parts of the ship.

It will include a 15,000-seat sports stadium, a water park, gardens, a convention center, a music hall and two museums. Roger Gooch said they will also include walking spaces and green areas. A massive aquarium will also be part of the ship where divers will be able to dive.

The floating city is expected to travel around the world over a period of 2 to 3 years. Roger Gooch added that construction could take around 4 years but initial residents may move in during the building phase. However, for now, it remains a concept and it is still uncertain when work will actually begin.
