Flood alert as glacial lakes threaten GB, KP and AJK

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for possible flooding in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir amid an increased risk of glacial lakes bursting.

The warning has been issued through the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operations Centre, which is closely monitoring the situation in vulnerable mountainous areas.

According to the NDMA, continued monsoon rainfall combined with rising temperatures has increased the possibility of glacial lake outburst floods. Such events can occur when water accumulated in glacial lakes is suddenly released, sending large volumes of water downstream and creating a serious threat to communities, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan have been identified as particularly vulnerable. These include Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Shigar, Gilgit, Rondu, Diamer, Astore, Skardu, Ghanche and Kharmang. Parts of Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir have also been placed among the sensitive areas.

The authority has also warned of possible flooding and landslides in several mountainous districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat and Shangla, along with adjoining mountainous areas, remain at risk because of the expected impact of heavy rainfall and unstable slopes.

Kohistan and neighbouring mountainous areas have also been identified as vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

The combination of monsoon rains, increasing temperatures and rapidly changing conditions in high-altitude areas could increase pressure on glacial lakes and surrounding terrain. A sudden rise in water levels or the failure of a glacial lake could result in rapid flooding in downstream areas.

The latest warning highlights the need for increased vigilance in vulnerable communities, particularly those located near rivers, streams and valleys connected to glaciers and glacial lakes.

Relevant authorities have been urged to closely monitor the situation and remain prepared to respond to any emergency. Residents in sensitive areas are also advised to remain alert, follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary movement near waterways and other potentially hazardous locations during periods of heavy rainfall.
