BEND, Oregon: Four people, including three children and a teacher, were killed when a 16-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, before an armed community member intervened and stopped the attack, police said.
The shooting took place at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, October 15, leaving the community in shock and renewing concerns about school safety and gun violence in the United States.
According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the victims were children aged 5, 8 and 11, along with one teacher. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also critically injured and taken to hospital.
Police said the teenage shooter forced his way into the school by firing through locked doors. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or established a motive for the attack.
Krantz said an armed community member witnessed the suspect entering the school and pursued him inside, eventually shooting him. Police confirmed that the suspect had died when officers entered the building.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the individual for intervening, saying the action had helped prevent further loss of life.
“No parent should have to have this kind of day, and no community should have to live through this kind of day,” Kotek said during a press conference alongside police officials.
She acknowledged the grief facing the families of those killed and injured, saying the community would mourn together as more details emerged.
Police launch investigation
Emergency responders received the first call at 12:59 p.m. local time after a person in a vehicle reported being shot at several times by someone carrying a long gun, Krantz said.
Authorities subsequently received dozens of calls reporting that a gunman had entered the school. Police immediately ordered a lockdown, and officers arrived at the scene at approximately 1:02 p.m.
An officer reported moments later that the suspect had been shot. Police then entered the school and confirmed his death.
Krantz said every Bend police officer had completed a full day of active-shooter training in August, underscoring the importance of preparedness for such emergencies.
“Unfortunately, this is something we train for on a regular basis, and we must,” he said, adding that the investigation would take considerable time.
Silver Rail Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students, generally aged 5 to 11. The school has approximately 450 students and 40 staff members.
Renewed debate over school shootings
The tragedy has revived longstanding concerns about gun violence in American schools, where previous attacks at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Robb Elementary have prompted national debates over firearms regulation.
Gabrielle Giffords, a former congresswoman who survived a mass shooting in 2011 and became a prominent gun-control advocate, expressed heartbreak over the killings.
“This cannot continue to be a reality in our country. Leaders at every level must step up and act,” she said.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the suspect’s actions and what led to the shooting.
