French anti-terrorism authorities in France have reportedly initiated a preliminary investigation into allegations involving “torture” and “war crimes” connected to the treatment of French citizens who were detained during a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla last month. The inquiry was opened on Friday following a formal referral from France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to statements from the national counterterrorism prosecutor’s office (PNAT).
This development comes in response to claims made by activists who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international mission that sought to challenge the maritime blockade imposed on Gaza. The flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces on May 18 while it was still in international waters, resulting in the detention of approximately 430 activists representing around 40 different countries.
The activists had set out as part of a humanitarian effort aimed at drawing attention to and contesting the blockade on Gaza, which has been widely criticized by various United Nations bodies and human rights organizations. Critics argue that the blockade contributes to severe humanitarian hardship and may violate international law.
Following their return to France on May 22, several of the French participants publicly accused Israeli authorities of mistreatment during their detention. Their accounts include allegations of physical violence, psychological humiliation, and degrading treatment while in custody. Some individuals claimed they were subjected to abusive conduct, including being forcibly restrained and placed under stressful conditions for extended periods.
One activist described a particularly disturbing experience, alleging that a soldier behaved in a sexually inappropriate manner, including groping and slapping, which led her to fear possible sexual assault. Another detainee reported that those held were forced to maintain uncomfortable “stress positions” for hours at a time, during which loud recordings of the Israeli national anthem were repeatedly played. According to these accounts, such practices contributed to an atmosphere of intimidation and psychological distress.
Legal representatives and human rights advocates have also voiced concern over the reported treatment. Suhad Bishara, legal director at Adalah, an organization that frequently represents Palestinian detainees and activists, stated that the accounts received from flotilla participants suggest extremely serious mistreatment. She noted that based on more than a decade of working with similar cases, the latest allegations could represent some of the most severe instances of abuse documented in recent years. Bishara added that, if verified, the conduct described could potentially meet the threshold of torture under international legal standards.
Israeli authorities, however, have firmly rejected the allegations. The Israel Prison Service responded to media inquiries, including those from AFP, stating that the accusations are entirely unfounded and have no basis in fact. Officials denied any misconduct during the detention of the activists and dismissed the claims as inaccurate.
The opening of the French investigation does not imply that charges have been filed or that wrongdoing has been established. Rather, it signals that prosecutors will now examine the evidence and testimonies to determine whether there is sufficient basis for further legal action. The case is expected to involve reviewing witness statements, medical reports, and diplomatic communications related to the detention incident.
The situation has added another layer of diplomatic sensitivity surrounding the broader conflict and ongoing debates about humanitarian access to Gaza.
