KARACHI: A special Freedom Train carrying the colours, traditions and cultural heritage of Sindh departed from Karachi Cantt Station on Thursday, August 14, as the province marked Pakistan’s Independence Day with a journey through the desert landscape of Thar.
The train was flagged off by Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah at a ceremony attended by senior officials of Pakistan Railways and representatives of the provincial authorities.
The special service has been arranged as a themed version of the Desert Safari Train, combining the traditional railway journey with activities aimed at highlighting Sindh’s rich cultural diversity and the spirit of Independence Day.
Pakistan Railways Deputy Divisional Superintendent Operations Hamid Farooq Qureshi, along with other railway officials, was present at the departure ceremony. Officials said the initiative was designed to bring the Independence Day celebrations to different parts of the province while showcasing the cultural identity of Sindh.
After departing from Karachi, the train is scheduled to reach Thar on Thursday evening. During its stay in the desert region, the Freedom Train will participate in Independence Day events at several locations, including Zero Point, a prominent site near the Pakistan-India border.
The celebrations will feature the province’s distinctive cultural traditions and are expected to provide residents and visitors with an opportunity to participate in festivities in the unique setting of the Thar desert.

The special train will remain in the region for the scheduled activities before beginning its return journey to Karachi on Friday evening.
