India head coach Gautam Gambhir has stressed the importance of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah achieving full fitness, rhythm and sufficient match time ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking during an interview, Gambhir said both players would have important roles for India at the World Cup, which will be held in South Africa.
Gambhir highlighted Pandya’s all-round abilities, saying his capacity to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a particularly valuable player. Pandya can bat at No. 6 or No. 7 and is capable of bowling up to 10 overs, allowing him to make a significant impact in different phases of a match.
However, Gambhir noted that Pandya has not played much cricket since the Indian Premier League. As a result, the all-rounder could lack sufficient match practice if he returns directly to ODI cricket. Gambhir suggested that playing some T20 cricket before returning to the 50-over format could be beneficial for Pandya.
The India coach also emphasised that no player should enter a World Cup only partially prepared. He said players need adequate game time and should be in the right rhythm before the tournament begins.
Discussing Jasprit Bumrah, Gambhir said Test cricket would also remain important for the fast bowler alongside ODI cricket. According to the coach, the team management will have to carefully determine the ideal workload and amount of game time for Bumrah.
Gambhir stressed that there is very little room for mistakes in a major tournament such as the World Cup. He therefore said special attention would need to be given to the match preparation and workload management of both Pandya and Bumrah.
The comments underline the importance of careful planning ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. For India, maintaining the fitness and availability of key players while ensuring they have sufficient competitive cricket could be an important part of the team’s preparation.
Pandya’s ability to contribute in both departments and Bumrah’s role as a frontline fast bowler make their preparation particularly significant as India plans for the tournament in South Africa.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is expected to place considerable demands on players, making fitness, workload management and regular match practice key considerations for teams preparing for the competition.
