A tragic incident that shocked Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) community has taken a heartbreaking turn, as a minor girl injured in a vehicle crash at an imambargah has died during treatment. The case, which initially appeared to be a road accident, is now being investigated by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) amid allegations that the act may have been deliberate.
The incident occurred late Sunday night at Imambargah Baqiatullah in Defence Phase VI, where dozens of people had gathered for a religious event. Witnesses said panic erupted when a speeding Suzuki vehicle suddenly lost control and rammed into the women’s section of the congregation, leaving worshippers scrambling for safety.
Sixteen people, including women and children, sustained injuries in the crash. Among them was young Zainera, daughter of Akram, who suffered critical wounds and was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries, turning the incident from a serious accident into a fatal tragedy.
The death of the young girl has intensified grief among family members and residents of the area, many of whom are demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Darakhshan Police Station under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including attempted murder, reckless driving, and property damage, as well as provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
A significant development in the case emerged when the complainant alleged that the crash was not accidental. According to the FIR, the incident was described as a deliberate act and possibly a rehearsal for a larger terrorist attack. The allegation has prompted authorities to examine all possibilities surrounding the incident.
However, senior police officials have urged caution against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed. DIG South Asad Raza stated that preliminary findings suggest the crash may have been an accident rather than an act of terrorism. He emphasized that investigators are reviewing all available evidence before reaching a final determination.
Authorities have also conducted medical examinations of the individuals travelling in the Suzuki vehicle to determine whether the driver or passengers were under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the crash.
Investigators revealed that the occupants of the vehicle are residents of Karachi’s Qati Pahari area near Orangi Town. Initial assessments raised the possibility of a mechanical failure, particularly brake malfunction, but officials said the exact cause would only become clear after a technical evaluation by the Traffic Police Road Analysis Unit.
Meanwhile, the case has officially been transferred to the Counter-Terrorism Department, which has begun examining every aspect of the incident. The CTD will investigate whether the crash was the result of negligence, mechanical failure, or a more sinister motive.
As Karachi mourns the loss of a young life, the city awaits the findings of investigators. For the grieving family of Zainera, the focus remains on seeking justice and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are fully uncovered. The outcome of the CTD probe is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the incident was a devastating accident or something far more alarming.
