Google has reportedly imposed new restrictions on Meta’s use of computing resources for its artificial intelligence (AI) projects.
According to the report, Meta requested additional computing capacity from Google to support its AI initiatives. However, Google was unable to meet the company’s growing demand due to limited available resources.
According to the Financial Times, Google informed Meta in March this year that it could not provide the level of computing capacity required for its Gemini AI models. As a result, several of Meta’s internal AI projects were affected and experienced delays.
The report added that other Google customers have also faced shortages in computing resources. However, Meta was impacted the most because its demand for AI computing power was exceptionally high.
Sources familiar with the matter said that following these restrictions, Meta instructed its employees to use AI tokens more carefully and efficiently. AI tokens are the units used to measure the amount of computing resources consumed by AI models.
Neither Google nor Meta issued an immediate official response to the report. Meanwhile, Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the claims.
Industry experts noted that major technology companies around the world are investing billions of dollars in new data centers and advanced semiconductor chips. Despite these investments, the rapidly increasing global demand for AI computing power continues to exceed available capacity, making it one of the industry’s biggest challenges.
The report also stated that Google Cloud’s revenue has grown significantly. However, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai has acknowledged that shortages in computing resources have limited the company’s ability to capitalize on further growth opportunities.
