Government weighs ‘smart lockdown’ amid rising petroleum prices

The federal government is considering a range of measures to reduce fuel consumption and ease the impact of rising petroleum product prices, with a final decision on a proposed “smart lockdown” expected on Tuesday evening.

The proposals were reviewed during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which focused on possible steps to control fuel consumption and reduce transportation-related demand.

According to sources, the government is considering a four-day working week for both public and private offices under the proposed smart lockdown. Under the proposal, Friday, Saturday and Sunday would be observed as holidays, while offices would operate for four days a week.

The government is also considering measures to reduce transportation and limit unnecessary movement. A rotational working arrangement for government employees is among the options under discussion, allowing different groups of employees to work on alternate days.

Sources said the government is also examining a proposal for markets to remain closed for three days a week. Reducing business and office operating hours is another measure being considered as part of the plan.

The proposed measures are aimed at lowering fuel consumption by reducing daily commuting, transportation activity and overall movement. The government is assessing the possible economic and administrative impact of each proposal before making a final decision.

Sources said a final decision on whether to implement the smart lockdown is expected by Tuesday evening. The government is likely to announce the measures after reviewing the recommendations and their potential impact on businesses, employees and the general public.
