Govt activates digital system for Rs100 per litre petrol relief

ISLAMABAD: The government has activated an advanced digital system to provide petrol at a discount of Rs100 per litre to eligible owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi vehicles and cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc under the Prime Minister’s special relief scheme.

The initiative aims to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on low-income workers and other citizens who depend on two- and three-wheelers or small cars for their daily travel and livelihoods. The government plans to deliver the subsidy through a transparent and technology-driven mechanism to prevent misuse and ensure that the benefit reaches eligible vehicle owners.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication developed the digital system on the Prime Minister’s directives to provide relief to the working class amid difficult economic conditions. The ministry worked with provincial government departments, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and telecom operators to establish an integrated system for identifying and verifying beneficiaries.

Under the scheme, eligible motorcycle and Qingqi owners will receive a Rs100 per litre reduction on up to 20 litres of petrol per month. Owners of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc will qualify for discounted petrol on a monthly limit of 30 litres.

The government has also introduced an automated verification mechanism in coordination with provincial transport and excise departments. The system will cross-check vehicle ownership and other relevant information before extending the subsidy to applicants.

Officials say the digital framework will help streamline the registration and verification process while reducing the chances of fraudulent claims. The use of NADRA and telecom data will also allow authorities to authenticate beneficiaries through digital channels rather than relying heavily on manual procedures.

The scheme is part of the government’s broader efforts to provide targeted financial relief to people facing higher transportation and fuel costs. By limiting the subsidy to specified vehicle categories and monthly fuel quotas, authorities intend to focus the relief on households and workers who are more vulnerable to increases in petrol prices.

Further details regarding registration, eligibility criteria and the method of purchasing subsidised petrol are expected to be communicated as the digital system becomes fully operational.
