Playing GTA without violence used to be a rare challenge players set for themselves. In GTA 6, developer Rockstar North says that option will be built into the game deliberately.

Speaking to Japan’s Famitsu magazine, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson revealed a new feature called suppressive fire. This mechanic lets players fire near a target instead of directly at them, creating a way to handle conflict without lethal force.

Nelson explained that players can intentionally miss and shoot close to someone to intimidate or confuse them. This buys valuable time to escape a dangerous situation instead of engaging in a full gunfight. It marks a first for the long-running franchise, clearly designed for players who prefer avoiding combat altogether.

As an example, Nelson pointed to robbery scenarios as the clearest showcase of this new approach. Players can walk into a store, avoid triggering any alarm, and leave before anyone even realises a crime took place.

This idea is also reflected in the GTA 6 Extended Look trailer. In one scene, characters Jason and Lucia find themselves cornered by police, yet the situation does not automatically demand violence.

According to Nelson, such moments don’t always have to end in bloodshed. He noted that many scenarios can be resolved without killing anyone, even if it takes more effort or careful planning from the player.

This suppressive fire feature adds to earlier reports confirming non-lethal tasers within the game. IGN has also reported that players will be able to target hostile NPCs in the limbs, incapacitating enemies instead of killing them. Another option lets players knock weapons out of an opponent’s hands entirely.

Together, these mechanics give players significantly more control over how their playthrough unfolds. Whether someone wants a chaotic, high-violence experience or a more restrained, stealthy approach, GTA 6 appears to be building the flexibility to support both styles of gameplay.
