NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to international peace and security during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and reiterated Islamabad’s support for peace, stability and cooperation in the region.

The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the worsening situation in the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and their aspiration for an independent state.

The prime minister briefed the UN chief on the growing challenge of Islamophobia and discussed developments in Afghanistan, particularly concerns over increasing terrorism linked to militants operating from Afghan territory.

Guterres praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts through dialogue and mediation. He also recognised Islamabad’s contributions to promoting sustainable peace and stability in the region.

The UN secretary-general further acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices and role in international efforts against terrorism, underscoring the country’s contribution to global peace and security.
