Erling Haaland has urged Manchester City to stand together and remain focused on football as the club faces uncertainty following a guilty verdict over more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.
The Norwegian striker acknowledged the difficult atmosphere surrounding the club but insisted that unity, positivity and support for one another would be crucial as City prepare for their return to action against Liverpool on Sunday.
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of financial rule breaches, with potential sanctions ranging from a substantial points deduction to expulsion from the Premier League. The case concerns alleged financial misconduct between 2009 and 2018, including the use of commercial contracts that the commission described as “sham” arrangements.
The findings have placed the club’s future under renewed scrutiny, although the severity of any punishment remains a key uncertainty.
Haaland joined City in 2022, after the period covered by the charges, but the current squad could still be affected by any eventual sanctions.
“We have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games,” Haaland said in comments published on the club’s website. “We have to stick together, and we have to spread the love to each other.”
The 26-year-old has become one of City’s most important players, scoring 169 goals in 205 appearances for the club. He signed a contract extension last year that runs until 2034, but the potential consequences of the case have raised questions about his long-term future.
Haaland also stressed his emotional connection with the club and its supporters, explaining that he considers himself a fan and understands their concerns.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca echoed the striker’s call for unity, expressing confidence in the club’s leadership while urging his players to concentrate on matters within their control.
Maresca said the organisation’s success over the past 15 years had been built on unity between its owners, executives, coaching staff, players and supporters.
Despite the off-field controversy, City have made an impressive start to the Premier League season, winning all five of their opening matches.
Maresca insisted that the squad remained in positive spirits and was focused on the challenge of facing Liverpool at Anfield.
With the financial case casting a shadow over the club, City will hope their performances on the pitch can provide stability while they await further developments.
