According to an official statement issued after the meeting, the commission reviewed several important matters related to judicial appointments and institutional reforms. One of the key decisions was the approval of amendments to the existing rules governing the appointment of judges, a move aimed at improving the transparency and effectiveness of the judicial selection process.

The commission also ratified the standards and criteria for nominating and selecting judges for constitutional benches. The endorsement is expected to provide greater clarity and consistency in the formation of benches responsible for hearing constitutional matters of national importance.

However, the commission deferred a decision on the proposed High Court Judges Performance Evaluation Rules 2026. The draft rules are intended to establish a framework for assessing the performance of high court judges, but members agreed that further consultation was necessary before final approval.

To ensure broader input, the commission directed all chief justices of the high courts, along with their respective senior-most judges, to submit recommendations and feedback on the proposed evaluation framework within seven days. Their suggestions will be reviewed before the commission makes a final decision on the matter.

The meeting also considered a letter concerning the replacement of a representative nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council. After deliberation, the commission concluded that the tenure of a member nominated by the bar council is constitutionally fixed at two years. As a result, it determined that there is no need to formulate additional rules regarding the duration of such appointments.

Legal observers view the latest decisions as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen judicial governance, improve appointment procedures, and enhance institutional accountability within Pakistan’s judicial system. The approval of amendments to the appointment rules and the ratification of criteria for constitutional bench selections are expected to contribute to a more structured and transparent judicial framework.
