LAHORE: Noreen Niazi, the 70-year-old sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, was admitted to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Wednesday after her health deteriorated during detention, her lawyer said.
Noreen was shifted to the cardiac hospital from custody following concerns about her medical condition, according to her legal counsel, Rana Mudassar Umer.
In a post on X, Umer confirmed her hospitalisation and expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding her transfer. He alleged that the authorities had not informed any member of her family about the move to the hospital.
The development has raised concerns about Noreen’s health and the arrangements for her medical care while she remains in custody.
Noreen was detained in September under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960, as PTI prepared for a planned protest march towards Islamabad.
Imran Khan’s other sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, were also taken into custody during the same period. Aleema was detained on September 20, while Uzma and Noreen were arrested on September 21.
The initial detention orders for the three sisters were issued for 30 days.
Their detentions came amid heightened political tensions surrounding PTI’s protest campaign and its demand for Imran Khan’s release.
No further details about Noreen’s medical condition or the circumstances of her hospital admission were immediately available.
