For the first time in Big Bash League (BBL) history, a match will be played outside Australia.
The opening match of the 2026–27 BBL season will be held on December 12 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India featuring defending champions Perth Scorchers against Melbourne Renegades.
Cricket Australia officially announced the historic fixture during an event in Melbourne attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The initiative has been supported by the governments of both countries and Cricket Australia hopes it could pave the way for future Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to be staged overseas.
Both teams will travel to India after the sixth round of the Sheffield Shield and will undergo several days of preparation in Chennai before the match.
