Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has directed government institutions to observe one “car-free day” every week following a rise in petrol prices, Iranian media reported.
Pezeshkian instructed government offices, institutions and state-owned companies to begin implementing the initiative as part of efforts to conserve fuel.
The Iranian president said the campaign should first be launched by the government, public offices, state institutions and government-owned companies.
His directive comes as tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed global energy prices higher. Brent crude rose by $3.22 per barrel, crossing the $101 mark to reach $101.11 per barrel in the international market.
Natural gas prices in Europe have also climbed to their highest level in three years, raising concerns about a potential energy crisis during the winter.
Shipping in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait is also facing heightened risks, while the movement of oil tankers through the Suez Canal has increased amid growing concerns over regional energy supplies.
Pezeshkian stressed that fuel policies should not place an additional burden on low-income groups.
