Iran has summoned Germany’s ambassador in Tehran in a retaliatory diplomatic move, escalating tensions between the two countries after Berlin accused Tehran of involvement in an alleged plot targeting prominent supporters of Israel.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned German Ambassador Axel Dittmann on October 20, following Germany’s decision to summon Iran’s ambassador over the alleged conspiracy.
The diplomatic exchange comes amid growing disagreement over accusations that Iran was linked to plans to assassinate prominent figures associated with Jewish organisations. German authorities have alleged Iranian involvement, while Tehran has firmly rejected the claims.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that the Foreign Ministry dismissed Berlin’s accusations as unfounded and politically motivated.
In its statement, the ministry argued that security-related allegations against Iran were part of what it described as an established approach by Israel’s government and certain Western countries.
Tehran also criticised what it called an attempt to give politically motivated claims the appearance of legitimate judicial proceedings. It said such allegations did not become credible simply because they were presented through court proceedings and warned that the approach could undermine the credibility of Germany’s judiciary.
The dispute follows a German court’s decision to convict two individuals for planning attacks against prominent figures associated with Jewish organisations. German authorities have linked the alleged conspiracy to Iran, prompting diplomatic action against Tehran.
Iran, however, has denied the accusations, setting the stage for a fresh confrontation between the two governments.
The reciprocal summoning of ambassadors highlights the widening diplomatic rift, with both sides using formal diplomatic channels to communicate their objections.
Although summoning an ambassador is a recognised diplomatic measure for expressing serious concern or protesting another government’s actions, the latest exchange could further complicate relations between Tehran and Berlin.
The episode also underscores broader tensions between Iran and several Western governments over security allegations and Tehran’s regional activities.
Neither side’s latest move has resolved the underlying disagreement, and it remains unclear whether the dispute will lead to further diplomatic measures.
With Germany standing by its concerns and Iran rejecting the allegations, the controversy threatens to deepen mistrust between the two countries at a time when relations are already strained by wider geopolitical tensions.
