Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, wrote on X that Trump’s “verbal admission” of cancelling the US-Iran memorandum of understanding had once again “driven the region towards fire.” Velayati, who served as Iran’s foreign minister for 16 years and remains a key figure in the country’s foreign policy establishment, cautioned that the region is “not a place for the political gambling of small countries.”

“We had previously warned that the region is not a place for the political gambling of small countries, and we have repeatedly proven that adventures are met with an immediate response,” Velayati wrote. He further stated that Iran has “its finger on the trigger” and will not remain “silent against humiliation and adventurism.”

The warning comes after Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran over, citing “the continued aggression of the Iranian regime” as the reason for the termination. Earlier, the US revoked a license that authorized Iranian oil sales, citing Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Velayati’s statement underscores Tehran’s determination to respond forcefully to any perceived US aggression. Iran has previously vowed to avenge the assassination of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israel strike on February 28, triggering a 108-day war that resulted in over 3,600 casualties in Iran and 13 American troop deaths.

The escalating rhetoric has raised fears of a return to full-scale conflict, with the international community urging restraint from both sides. The collapse of the ceasefire, which had provided a brief period of de-escalation, has left the future of US-Iran relations uncertain. As Velayati’s warning makes clear, Iran is prepared to defend its interests and will not hesitate to respond to any perceived aggression.
