The Islamabad police have introduced a new duty policy for 2026, making weekly rest mandatory for officers and personnel in a move aimed at regulating working hours and leave arrangements.
Under the new policy, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad will have the authority to approve casual leave for officers and personnel of all ranks. The IGP will also be authorised to approve extended leave for officers up to the rank of superintendent of police (SP) and deputy superintendent of police (DSP).
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) will be able to approve all types of leave for personnel from constable to inspector.
The policy also defines the powers of senior officers to grant casual leave. Station house officers (SHOs) will be allowed to approve up to three days of casual leave for constables and head constables, while DSPs can grant leave for up to five days.
SPs will have the authority to approve casual leave for personnel from constable to sub-inspector. Senior superintendents of police (SSPs) will be able to grant up to three days of casual leave to SHOs and inspectors.
The new rules also specify leave entitlements for religious travel. Police personnel will be eligible for 45 days of leave for Hajj and 21 days for Umrah and other religious pilgrimages. Medical leave will also be available to officers and personnel who require time off for health-related reasons.
Weekly rest will be treated separately from regular leave under the policy. Police personnel appearing in central and provincial competitive examinations will be entitled to up to 20 days of leave, while up to 15 days may be granted for attending interviews.
The policy also provides special leave for marriage. Female police officers will be eligible for one month of leave on the occasion of their marriage, while male personnel will receive 10 days.
The revised framework establishes specific leave limits and approval powers for different ranks within the Islamabad police, while making weekly rest a mandatory part of duty arrangements.
