Pakistan has strongly condemned Israel’s continued military aggression in Syria, demanding an immediate withdrawal from all occupied Syrian territory and strict compliance with the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. Addressing a United Nations Security Council briefing on Syria’s humanitarian and political situation on October 12, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, said Israeli military actions violated international law and threatened Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Such aggression is especially alarming as Syria struggles to rebuild its institutions after years of war and political instability. Israel’s continued military presence and attacks risk worsening the crisis and creating further obstacles to peace. Jadoon reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that the occupied Syrian Golan Heights remain Syrian territory under international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 338 and 497. He called on Israel to withdraw from occupied Syrian land and respect the agreements governing the separation of forces. Pakistan also stressed that Syria’s future must be decided through an inclusive political process that protects national unity and promotes reconciliation. The international community must not allow military force to become a tool for violating the sovereignty of another country.
Pakistan also called for dialogue to resolve tensions in Suweida and welcomed renewed engagement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces. Jadoon said Syria needed sustained international support to recover from years of conflict. Sanctions relief, investment and stronger economic partnerships could help rebuild the country and improve living conditions for its people.
A UN commission investigating Syria recently expressed alarm over Israeli military operations, warning that some actions, including the detention of civilians, could amount to war crimes. In August, Syrian state media reported eight Israeli airstrikes on an airbase in northwestern Syria, while a US envoy described the strikes as an unnecessary escalation. After Bashar al-Assad’s removal from power, Israel seized positions in southwestern Syria and targeted Syrian military equipment. Israel’s security concerns cannot justify violations of Syrian sovereignty. The United Nations must press for an end to aggression, respect for international law and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Syrian territory. Silence or inaction will only weaken international law and deepen regional instability.
